As a representative field in the biological industry, bio-artificial organs will spur on the growth of the entire industry in the 21st century. With the prolongation of average human life span and the overall aging of society, the demand for these organs is increasing. The scope of their application is becoming wider as well. Under such circumstances, the market value of bio-artificial organs continues to rise and new products are being developed constantly. The bio-artificial organ market is very promising indeed. The global market is expected to amount to approximately 840 billion dollars by 2005, thus attaining 137% in growth rate compared with that in 2002. In the United States, where the research on and merchandising of bio-artificial organs are being actively conducted, the government and multinational pharmaceutical companies provide concentrated support to some 100 enterprises related to these organs. As for Japan, research institutes and universities continue to conduct research on bio-artificial organs and the government intensively invests in the field. In fact, the potential domestic market is estimated to amount to over 4,000 yen. In Korea, the government supports the bio-artificial organ industry through national projects such as 'Biotech 2000' and the industry, universities, and research institutes conduct joint research. All such activities will eventually lead not only to Korea's high competitiveness in the global market but also to the domestic production of bio-artificial organs, the entire supply of which still must be imported, and to the growth of the domestic market (approximately 70 billion won at present). |
